Longevity

Living a long and healthy life depends partly on habits we can act on: physical activity, sleep, diet, social ties and intellectual activity. The resources in this topic bring together what research knows about these factors and help you build them into daily life, including at the time of retirement. The manuals for professionals cover neurocognitive disorders and cognitive stimulation.

Depression in older adults: a therapist's manual

A twelve-session protocol for depression in older people, at home as well as in residential care. First, what is specific to this age: a depression that often comes without sadness, the distinction from a neurocognitive disorder, the debated hypothesis of vascular depression, bereavement, isolation and loss of independence, the illnesses and medicines that belong to the doctor, and a suicide risk that is particularly high in older men. Then the treatment: behavioural activation, problem solving adapted to executive difficulties, work on thoughts, on losses and on connection with others, and life review, in an adapted format — shorter sessions, written materials, home or telephone, a place for the carer. Worksheets to hand over and full references.

Mild to moderate dementia: cognitive stimulation and rehabilitation — a therapist's manual

A twenty-nine-session programme for the person with mild to moderate dementia, based on the two best-evaluated psychological interventions at this stage. It begins by reviewing the different dementias — Alzheimer's disease, vascular and mixed forms, Lewy body dementias, frontotemporal dementias — and what each one changes in the sessions. First, fourteen sessions of group cognitive stimulation, twice a week, in which people are asked for opinions rather than correct answers; then ten individual sessions of rehabilitation directed at goals the person has chosen, and four maintenance sessions. Reminiscence, anxiety and depression, safety (acute confusion, abuse, suicide risk) and what should not be offered instead, such as cognitive training presented as a treatment, each have their own section, with worksheets to hand over and full references.

Neurocognitive disorders: supporting the person and the carer — a therapist's manual

A two-part programme for neurocognitive disorders. For the family carer, eight sessions drawn from the coping strategy programme whose effect on anxiety and depression lasts six years: understanding behaviours, building a plan, communicating differently, working on guilt and on grieving the living, finding moments that count again, preparing for the future. For the person affected at the mild stage, five sessions: their goals, their compensations, their activities, their mood, their wishes. Differential diagnosis, the structured approach to behavioural symptoms, abuse, driving, decision-making capacity, end of life, worksheets to hand over and full references.
